Some 30 photographers will be part of the 6th edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie. The event, which will start in mid-July 2015, will run this year until late September, presenting exhibits and installations both in the open air and indoors all over the Gaspé. The Photographer Tour, meanwhile, which hosts most of the artists taking part in the event, will be offering encounters between the public and photographers on the topic of creation in various spots in the Gaspé.

In the tumultuous events that we’re experiencing on a worldwide scale, the theme “Identities and Territories” aims to bring together different voices and photographic records that observe, and reflect on, these concepts. The world moves on. Societies evolve. Countries change. Populations travel or emigrate. Natural and artificial borders have never been so easy to cross, and yet, walls keep going up to physically keep people apart. How do we define ourselves today, in a world in perpetual movement? Some will do it by focusing solely on external qualities – physical, social, historical, economic or political. However, never has territory played so much of a role in the construction of the individual. We may forget it or deny, but the natural elements that surround us, the environment that bears us, these influence us, shape us and reveal us. To analyze the connection between man and territory is to inquire into our own identity, built up over time, the seasons, and change.

The Photographer Tour, presented as part of the 5th edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie, will run from August 15 to 19 in different municipalities on the peninsula.

At the heart of Rencontres, the Photographer Tour is a one-of-a-kind event that brings together visitors, photographers and the local population on the Gaspé territory. It offers public get-togethers on the subject of creation in the form of photo projections, lecture-discussions and roundtable discussions. Each day of the Tour will be an opportunity to meet artists at their exhibit sites in the presence of Rencontres personnel. The choice to act on five consecutive days ensures the attendance of all the guest artists on the Gaspé territory.

AVIGNON // The Tour will begin on Friday, August 15, at 4:30 p.m. at Parc du Vieux-Quai in Maria with a visit of the exhibits Pastoral Monuments and Inside the View by Helen Sear (Raglan, Wales, U.K.) and a get-together with the artist. At 6:00 p.m., the public will be invited to the Carleton-sur-Mer municipal beach (Carleton sector) to visit The Sensor by Bertrand Carrière (Longueuil, Québec) and to meet the artist. Afterwards, at 6:45 p.m., the official Photographer Tour launch evening will be taking place at the Vaste et Vague artist center in Carleton. On this occasion there will be a visit of the exhibit Ice by Flora (Paris, France), the result of a residency in the Gaspé in the winter of 2013, with the artist in attendance. Finally, towards 9:00 p.m. (after dark), the public will be invited to return to the Carleton beach, this time for a projection of the project “A Bridge over the Atlantic” and a get-together with the participating artists from Québec and France, as well as a visit of the video installation Volatile Slide and Other Disorders by Maryse Goudreau (Miguasha, the Gaspé) in the company of the artist.

On Saturday, August 16, at 10 a.m., the public will be able to attend, at the Vaste et Vague artist center, the roundtable discussion “Artwork acquisition: the market for photography,” hosted by Alexis Desgagnés (exhibition curator, artist and researcher). Guest panelists will be: Stéphane Aquin (curator, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), Jo-Ann Kane (curator, National Bank art collection), Joyce Yahouda (director, Galerie Joyce Yahouda, Montreal), Bertrand Carrière (artist) and Maryse Goudreau (artist). The roundtable will be followed at 12:30 p.m. by a visit of the exhibit Changing the World by Gilbert Garcin (Marseille, France) at Saint-Joseph school.

HAUTE-GASPÉSIE // The Tour will continue on the north coast of the Gaspé late in the day on Saturday. At 5:15 p.m. there will be a visit of Micronations by Léo Delafontaine (Paris, France) at the municipal rest stop in Cap-Chat, followed by a visit of the exhibits in Marsoui: Tiksi by Evgenia Arbugaeva (Yakutsk, Russia) at Parc A.-Couturier and Heliotropes #7. Northbound by Laurent Villeret (Paris, France) at the Couturier building. At &:00 p.m., a get-together with the two French artists and a projection of their work is scheduled at Parc A.-Couturier (or at the recreation center in case of rain).

CÔTE-DE-GASPÉ // On Sunday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m. there will be a visit of the exhibit 132 by the collective Kahem, made up of Québec photographers Charles-Frédérick Ouellet, Christian Lamontagne, Nicolas Levesque and Yoanis Menge, on the promenade towards the Galipeault covered bridge in Grande-Vallée. At 5:00 p.m., at the Musée de la Gaspésie in the town of Gaspé, the roundtable “Publications as a means of exposure” will take place with panelists Alexis Desgagnés (exhibition curator, artist and researcher), Serge Allaire (exhibition curator, researcher and autor), Rozenn Quéré (artist) and Bertrand Carrière (artist). In the same place, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a get-together with as well as a projection of the work by both Yoanis Menge (L’Étang-du-Nord, Magdalen Islands) of the collective Kahem and Linda Rutenberg (Montreal, Québec), who is exhibiting The Gaspé Peninsula: Land on the Edge of Time at the Museum.

ROCHER-PERCÉ // On Monday, August 18, at 3:00 p.m. the Tour continues in Percé with a get-together with artists Patrick Dionne and Miki Gingras (Montreal, Québec) near the dock and on the promenade along the sea, in the presence of the residents of Percé who took part in their project Story Gatherers, which resulted from a creation residency in the spring and summer of 2014. A visit of the exhibit Eyes on the Collection Loto-Québec, showing 35 years of Québec creation through the works of 23 photographers, is also scheduled at the same location.

BONAVENTURE // On Tuesday, August 19, at 3:00 p.m. the public is invited to Chandler, on the Parc du Souvenir road and the Circuit des bâtisseurs bridge, for a visit of the exhibit The Girl Who Sees the Verses by Rina Vukobratovic (Novi Sad, Serbia). That will be followed, at 6:00 p.m., by a visit of the exhibit Possible and Imaginary Lives by Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh and Rozenn Quéré (Brussels, Belgium) at the LeBoutillier & Brothers warehouse on the Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac historical site in Paspébiac and by a projection of the work of these artists. Rozenn Quéré will be on hand. Finally, at 7:30 p.m., at the Centre culturel in Paspébiac, there will be a projection and get-together evening with a number of artists: Jean-François Bérubé (Montreal, Québec), who is presenting Bonum iter Compostellam (Have a good trip to Compostela) in Bonaventure and in Gaspé; Michael Flomen (Montreal, Québec), whose project Higher Ground is on exhibit in Maria, Estelle Marcoux (Caplan, the Gaspé), who is presenting Tia’Mugwet (Moose Hunt) in Gesgapegiag (Maria); and Isabelle Hayeur (Rawdon, Québec), who is exhibiting Mirages at Paspébiac.

For the fifth edition of the festival, Rencontres Internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie has partnered with the Collection Loto-Québec in a shared commitment to supporting visual-arts creation in Québec.

The Collection Loto-Québec boasts over 4,700 works produced by over 1,200 local artists.

From mid-July to mid-September, come discover the exhibit “Eyes on the Collection Loto-Québec,” which showcases 35 years of creation in Québec in 35 photographs. The photos presented in Percé on the promenade along the sea are the work of 23 photographic artists, including Jocelyne Alloucherie, Bertrand Carrière, Doreen Lindsay, Gabor Szilasi and Bill Vazan.

We will have the pleasure of welcoming in the Gaspé the coordinator of the Collection Loto-Québec, who will accompany us on the Photographer Tour from August 15 to 19. The tour will make a stop in Percé on August 18 to present the exhibit “Eyes on the Collection Loto-Québec” to the public.

Michael Flomen : Installation at Maria – 5th edition

The Higher Ground photograms (Michael Flomen) are the results of a dialogue between the artist and Nature, specifically fireflies. The large-format film documents the interaction of energies with the natural elements at night directly in the countryside, fixing the natural light of the firefly.

The best time to view this installation is at dusk and during the night. This is time when the actual photogrammes were made and when the fireflies come out to flash their light.

Rencontres wanted to let you take a look at the artist’ creation work by means of a video interview.

The Photographer Tour of the 4th edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie will take place from August 15 to 21 in the four corners of the peninsula. During that period, some 30 photographers from the Gaspé, elsewhere in Québec and from various countries will take part in a series of get-togethers on the subject of creation in the form of vernissages, projections and meetings with the photographers.

The first activity will be held on August 15 at 6 p.m. on the Little School site in Nouvelle, with the vernissage of the exhibit Playing with Reality by Yves Gonthier (Maria, the Gaspé), with the photographer present. It will be followed, at 8 p.m., by the vernissage of the exhibit by Jean-François Lamoureux and Mathilde Fournier-Hébert (Montreal, Québec), at the Saint-Laurent-de-Matapédia church in Matapedia. This is the fruit of their creation residency in the Gaspé, which runs from August 1 to 14.

Opening evening

The Photographer Tour opening evening will be held on August 16 beginning at 5 p.m. in Carleton-sur-Mer. The public will first be invited to the lagoon rest stop in Saint-Omer to see the Model Homes exhibit by Isabelle Hayeur (Rawdon, Québec) and to meet the artist. Starting at 6 p.m., at the Centre d’artists Vaste et Vague in Carleton, the vernissage of the 0:00 GMT Intersection installation by the Tendance Floue collective (Montreuil, France) will take place, as well as a meeting with its members on the theme “Creating by Way of an Artists’ Collective.” The event will be followed by a lecture by Jean-François Nadeau, cultural-page director of the newspaper Le Devoir. Around 9 p.m., the public and the artists will be invited to make their way to the Carleton municipal beach to attend the vernissage of the Archipelago installation by Serge Clément (Montreal, Québec) in the presence of the artist.

On August 17, at 11:30 a.m., the public is invited to the Gaspé’s North Shore for the vernissage of the Sandra Lachance exhibit At My Last Meal, and works by Jérôme Landry (Cap-Chat, the Gaspé), at the rest area in Cap-Chat in the presence of the artists. At 2:30 p.m., people are invited to the Couturier building in Marsoui for the vernissage of Tokyo Compression by Michael Wolf (Hong Kong, China), then to A.-Couturier park for the vernissage of Domaine de la Florida by Sébastien Michaud (Montreal, Québec), in his presence. Next, at 8:30 p.m., the public is expected at the Copper Interpretation Centre in Murdochville for the vernissage of the exhibit by Louis Couturier and Jacky Georges Lafargue (Carleton-sur-Mer, the Gaspé), Murdochville: The Beauty of Destruction, as well as a projection and a get-together with the artists.

On August 18 at noon at the Musée de la Gaspésie in the town of Gaspé, the vernissage of the exhibit by Alain Paiement (Montreal, Québec) entitled From a Different Angle will be held with the artist in attendance. At 3 p.m., the vernissage of the exhibits Cross-Perspectives by Guillaume D. Cyr (Quebec City, Québec), a native of New Richmond, and The Gaspé, Wild, with Your Feet in the Water… by Frédéric Merlet (Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, France), will take place at the Suzanne-Guité space in Percé. At 5 p.m., in Chandler, on the Souvenir park road and the Circuit des bâtisseurs footbridge, there will be the vernissage of Memory (Woman Scenario) and a get-together with its creators, Patrick Dionne and Miki Gingras (Montreal, Québec). At 8 p.m., at the Bonaventure marina, the public is invited to the vernissage for the exhibit of Evgenia Arbugaeva (Iakoutsk, Russia) entitled Tiksi, and to a projection of the artist’s work (her presence remains to be confirmed).

On August 19 at 7 p.m. at the Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac historical site in Paspébiac, the vernissage of the exhibit The Great Divide by Beatrix von Conta (Peyrins, France) will take place, in addition to a projection of her work. A get-together with the artist on the theme “Mutation and Fragility of Gaspesian Landscapes” is yet to be confirmed. Starting at 7:30 p.m. there will be a screening of the film by Helen Doyle (Longueuil, Québec), Frameworks: Images of a Changing World (HD — 90 minutes), which bears on the meaning and the impact of images. The screening will be followed by a get-together with the director.

On August 20 at 6 p.m. in New Richmond, the Gaspesian British Heritage Village will be welcoming the public for the vernissage of The Devonians by Jocelyne Alloucherie (Montreal, Québec) in the presence of the artist. The public will afterwards be invited to make their way to Pointe-Taylor park for the vernissage of Depressive Landscapes by Armando Ribeiro (London, U.K.), along with a projection of the artist’s work and a get-together with him.

On August 21 at 7:30 p.m., at the Vieux-Quai park in Maria, the final Photographer Tour activity will take place with the vernissage of the exhibit by Suzanne Opton (New York City), bringing together Soldier and Soldier+Citizen. There will be a projection of the work of the artist, whose presence has yet to be confirmed.

A reminder that Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie is an invitation to come meet these artists in a region where the photograph and the landscape connect around an artistic project. The exhibits and installations of Rencontres are presented until September 11 in the region’s 15 host municipalities.

Unveiling — 4th edition of the Rencontres

On the theme “The nature of man: crafting the real,” the 4th edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie, summer of 2013, is an invitation to journey over the peninsula and follow the artistic trajectory of over 30 photographers from here and elsewhere ::

The 2013 Rencontres brings together artists who are interested in representing the real in ways that are distorted, transformed or modified, and in so doing stimulating new perceptions in viewers. Any number of avenues have been made available to the creators to consider the way in which individuals live in their environment and the manner in which they comprehend it.

At the heart of the event, the Photographer Tour will run from August 15 to 21. Some 30 photographers will take part in public get-togethers on the subject of creation, in the form of projections or lecture-discussions. The event will open at the Quai des arts in Carleton-sur-Mer, and then the Tour will continue towards the north shore of the Gaspé Peninsula, making its way to among other places the towns of Gaspé and Percé, and then on to Baie-des-Chaleurs.

The public is therefore invited to visit the installations and exhibits from July 10 to September 11 in 14 host municipalities: Cap-Chat, Marsoui, Grande-Vallée, Gaspé, Murdochville, Percé, Chandler, Paspébiac, Bonaventure, New Richmond, Maria, Carleton-sur-Mer, Nouvelle and Matapédia.

Rencontres de la photo: towards the 4th edition

Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie is delighted with the success of its 3rd edition, which wound up on September 10, on the theme of “Shaping the course.” The organization is enthusiastically preparing its 4th edition, which will run from July 10 to September 11, 2013, in 14 host municipalities, and is sending out an appeal for proposals.

“Each year Rencontres puts on display different photographic outlooks and approaches, from here and elsewhere,” states executive and artistic director Claude Goulet. “While the public can track the work of certain artists from one year to the next – principally by way of our artist residencies – it also has the opportunity of discovering the work of new photographers, recognized or emerging, edition after edition.”

New York photographer Nick Kline, who took part in Rencontres for the first time this year, is excited about the experience of the event’s professional week. “For me, Rencontres was like running a marathon. It involved a lot of complex logistics, long distances to travel, highs of seeing great work and meeting amazing people, moments for the mind to wander in varied scenery and waves of tiredness because it’s non-stop. I’m home and feel profoundly enriched because of it.”

Artist residencies: a bridge between different editions

The yield of a number of visits by Serge Clément (Montreal, Québec) to the Gaspé Peninsula and to the Magdalen Islands from 1970 up to today, the installations for his project Platform were presented in 2012 in Rivière-à-Claude and in Percé as part of Parcours du point de vue – Gaspésie. Bearing on the evolution of the landscape and its correlation with human and social activity, they successfully kindled the interest of Gaspesians of all ages. Rencontres foresees carrying on with the display of installations from the Platform project in 2013.

Beatrix von Conta (Peyrins, France), who presented the exhibit Timişoara, Between Gray and Green in Marsoui for the 2011 edition of Rencontres, was back in the Gaspé this summer for an artist residency. With a critical distance, the photographer has spent 25 years questioning the fragility of the contemporary landscape. She highlights, with no trace of nostalgia, both the slight and the more prominent signs of a progressing mutation. The result of her work on Gaspesian territory, entitled The Great Divide, will be unveiled at the 2013 edition of Rencontres.

Jocelyne Alloucherie (Montreal, Québec), who this year exhibited the project Sirens in Paspébiac, will rejoin us next year for a residency project. Excited by the scouting that she has been able to carry out in 2012, she will put down roots in the Gaspé for picture taking in 2013. The work of Jocelyne Alloucherie has always focused on two major planes, architecture and landscape, and in the Gaspé her plan is to produce an installation that merges photographs and architectural modules.

Note also that Guillaume D. Cyr and Yana Ouellet (Quebec City, Québec), who in 2012 presented the project Gaspésie Human Less, Part 1 in Chandler, are currently artists in residence in France in the framework of the partnership between Rencontres and the Conseil général de la Vendée. Vendée photographer Frédéric Merlet, meanwhile, will be in residence in the Gaspé beginning September 26.

Furthermore, Rencontres plans on continuing, in 2013, its collaboration with Maryse Goudreau (Pointe-à-la- Croix, the Gaspé), who these last years has presented Events for the Memory of the Docks. In August 2012, on the Chandler dock, she photographed hundreds of extras from a perch in an aerial basket 63 feet above the ground with an 1870s-vintage camera and a period process (humid collodion). Her interventions put a face on the dreadful disappearances being suffered by many Gaspesian docks.

Call for proposals

Rencontres internationales de photographie en Gaspésie invites photographers who would like to take part in the event to submit their proposals. Although they will be accepted at all times, proposals will preferably be submitted before November 1 in order to be processed for the next edition. Details and form: admissions.photogaspesie.ca.

Rencontres de la photo professional week starting August 17

On August 17 at 5 p.m., at Centre d’artistes Vaste et Vague in Carleton-sur-Mer, the public can attend the vernissage of the exhibit Stripes and Stripes by Nick Kline (New York, New York) and the launch of the monograph L’Appel (SAGAMIE Édition d’art) by Maryse Goudreau (Pointe-à-la-Croix, the Gaspé).

On August 18 at noon, at the rest area in Cap-Chat, the vernissage for the exhibit Imperial Valley by Christian Lamontagne (Sainte-Félicité, Québec) and for Gaspesian Women by Jean-François Bérubé (Montreal, Québec) and Sophie Jean (Rimouski, Québec) is taking place.

On August 18 at 7 p.m., at the recreation center in Marsoui, the official opening evening of the Rencontres professional week will unfold. A projection of the work of Normand Rajotte (Montreal, Québec) and of Ewa Monika Zebrowski (Montréal, Quebec) will be presented, and the artists will talk with the public about the interpretation of day-to-day life in photography.

August 19 at 10 a.m., in the heart of the municipality of Rivière-à-Claude, will feature the vernissage of the first stage of the Platform project by Serge Clément as part of the Parcours du Point de vue. The artist will present his project, and a discussion with the public will take place over breakfast. That activity will be followed, at 2 p.m., by a guided tour of La Presse: Current events from 1990 to 2012, a 100-photo exhibit in Grande-Vallée, on the Galipeault covered bridge. In the evening, on the theme of “The artist – architect of change!,” the public can attend a projection and a lecture on the artistic career of Edward Burtynsky (Toronto, Ontario), of Gabor Szilasi and of Doreen Lindsay (Montreal, Québec) at 7 p.m. on the outdoor stage of the Musée de la Gaspésie in the town of Gaspé.

On August 20 at 2 p.m., in the park at the courthouse in Percé, the vernissage will be held for the second stage of the Platform project by Serge Clément (Montreal, Québec) as part of the Parcours du Point de vue. The public can hear a presentation by the artist about his project, carried out over a more than 20-year period in the Gaspé and the Magdalen Islands, and discuss it with him. At 6 p.m., people can take part in Event for the memory of the docks by Maryse Goudreau (Pointe-à-la-Croix, the Gaspé) on the CTMA dock in Chandler. A get-together on the site of the photo installations by Guillaume D. and Yana Ouellet (Quebec City, Québec), Gaspésie Human Less (part 1), will take place in the second part of the evening, near the marina.

On August 21 at 7 p.m., at the Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac historic site (in Paspébiac), a projection of the work of Jocelyne Alloucherie (Montreal, Québec) and of Flora (Paris, France) will be held in the presence of these artists, who will talk about their careers.

On August 22 at 7 p.m. at the Bonaventure marina a projection and a get-together will be held with Vanessa Winship (London, U.K.) and then with Eli Laliberté (Cascapédia–Saint-Jules, the Gaspé). Aurore and Parfum de lumière, two short films by Serge Clément (Montreal, Québec), will be screened afterwards.

On August 23 at 7 p.m., at the Saint-Laurent-de-Matapédia church (in Matapedia), a projection of the work of Guy Lavigueur (Montréal, Québec) will be held, as well as of that of Roger Proulx (Montreal, Québec), in addition to a discussion on their various creation projects.

On August 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Centre d’artistes Vaste et Vague in Carleton-sur-Mer, on the theme of “Photojournalism: Its future and its practice,” a get-together and discussion will take place with Anja Niedringhaus (Geneva, Switzerland), Martin Beaulieu (Montreal, Québec) and Martin Tremblay (La Presse, Montreal, Québec).

On August 25 at 10 a.m., at the Saint-Omer rest area, Rencontres offers a visit to the exhibit by Martin Beaulieu (Montreal, Québec), followed by a breakfast get-together with Aislinn Leggett (Montreal, Québec) at Place du Marché (yard of the Petite École) in Nouvelle. Finally, at 6 p.m., under the tent at the Parc du Vieux-Quai in Maria, the public can take part in the closing evening of the Rencontres professional week, presented in collaboration with the Municipality of Maria. Jean-François Nadeau, director of the cultural pages at the newspaper Le Devoir, will comment on the exhibit Le Devoir: Current events from 1990 to 2012, which presents 122 photos in Maria. Moreover, a selection of photographs by all the artists participating in the 3rd edition of Rencontres will be presented on a large screen.
